Three of Europe’s largest online retailers Yoox Net-A-Porter (YNAP), Zalando, and About You are collaborating on a one-of-a-kind climate action plan to reduce carbon emissions within their value chains and across the fashion industry.
To reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from the fashion sector, the three retailers will establish a custom online learning tool to assist their brand partners in setting climate targets that are in line with science. Yoox Net-A-Porter, Zalando, and About You will fully fund the platform, which will launch as a trial in September with a free version available to selected brand partners before being made available to all brands that qualify in 2023.
It will explain in detail how to measure emissions, set challenging goals that are consistent with climate science, and submit them for the Science Based Targets initiative’s approval. Additionally, it will give fashion brands a special place to interact with one other and sustainability professionals. The program, which complies with antitrust regulations, will be administered in association with Quantis, a renowned environmental sustainability firm with knowledge of climate change.

Geoffroy Lefebvre, chief executive at Yoox Net-A-Porter, said in a statement: “Our commitment to climate action can only be realized through innovative partnership. This next step prioritizes investing in brand partners at different stages in their climate journeys, supporting them to set their science-based targets. By collaborating with About You and Zalando, together we can drive a more consistent approach in our efforts towards reducing the emissions of luxury and fashion.”
Hannes Wiese, co-founder and co-chief executive at About You, added: “We see an industry-changing momentum in aligning greenhouse gas emission reduction pathways with science. More than 1,500 companies had their targets approved by the SBTi as of July 2022. We have set science-based targets approved by the SBTi and are benefitting from our efforts now. 46.6 percent of our partners on greenhouse gas emissions had their targets approved by February 2022. We invite the remaining business partners to do the same.”
David Schneider, Co-CEO at Zalando concluded: “Decarbonizing supply chains in partnership with suppliers, brands, logistics, packaging partners and now also our competitors is a powerful lever for driving meaningful change in the fashion industry. We aim for 90% of our partners (by emissions) to set science-based targets by 2025, and the new learning platform is a key initiative towards realizing this ambitious goal.” YNAP About You Zalando
