Ushanka – The Fashiongton Post
Ushanka is a Russian fur cap with ear flaps which can be tied up to the crown of the hat, or fastened at the chin to protect the ears and lower chin from the cold. An alternative way to wear it is to bend the flaps back and tie them behind the head, which is called “ski-style”.
This hat type used to be popular in Russia, Ukraine, Finland and Sweden. Usually being made from the inexpensive sheepskin, rabbit or muskrat fur. A quality ushanka hat made of the mink fur (more often in the Arctic regions) could protect during the extremely low temperatures, as for example −94°F to −40°F.
