Fall Trends 2022

Each season I share the best and most wearable fashion trends for women over 40. These are the trends that more mature women can actually wear and feel amazing in. As with all trends, you should pick and choose the ones you love the most and then aim to give the trends your very own spin…make them your own! You also do NOT have to try ANY of these trends. I just want to make sure you have all the resources you need to be your most stylish self! Luckily, this year’s fall fashion trends are exciting, nostalgic, and will make you want to move! 😉

If you missed the spring and summer trends, make sure you check out this post because a lot of those trends will continue into the fall!

1) Da Bomb

The bomber jacket is back! If you’ve been following me from the beginning, you might remember me talking about the bomber jacket about 7 years ago. Now, the bomber jacket has a new element…it’s oversized! Silhouettes have gotten baggier and more oversized over the past year or so and the bomber jacket is following suit. If you already own a bomber jacket and it’s not that newer, oversized silhouette, that’s okay… I’m definitely going to wear my older cropped, body-skimming bomber jacket still!

How do you make it wearable? Well, the bomber is already inherently a very wearable piece for everyone. It’s a casual (but elevated) staple you can style with jeans and a tee for weekend errands or casual dinner.

2) The White Tank

On the runways, we saw white tanks paired with everything and worn alone too! A white tank on its own can be difficult because of the bra situation. If you’re busty, it’s especially difficult. But to make it more wearable, I’d wear it under a blazer, bomber, or moto jacket. There are tons of white tank options out there…high neck, v-neck, scoop neck, fitted, relaxed…you get it. If you don’t like to show your chest, opt for a high-neck tank. If you don’t like the fitted look, go for something more relaxed. If you’re worried about it riding up, get a bodysuit. You can try this trend out in a lot of different ways.

3) Fluffy Knits

Think mohair, angora, wools, and all of the really heavily textured fabrics you want to just reach out and touch! I’ve always loved fuzzy sweaters and don’t think they’ve ever been out of style. But they just happen to be more on-trend at the moment.

4) Iconic 80s

Who remembers the lace gloves, pearls, big earrings, and overly Aqua Net hair?! Well, luckily the over-the-top hair isn’t back in style, but there are quite a few 80s-inspired trends this year. Including one of my personal favorites…strong shoulders pads! It’s not just shoulder pads though, it’s also oversized shoulders that are slopped and have dropped shoulders. If you have broad shoulders, this trend can be difficult to wear. But there are tons of subtle options out there you can try. You could also try a puff shoulder top, baggy jeans, platform shoes, leather, bomber jackets, miniskirts, sequins, or stirrup pants…alllll the 80s styles are IN.

Another 80s-inspired trend I originally saw and talked about 2-3 years ago is neon colors. I was sure they weren’t going to stick around…but they did! I’m talking more about the color trends below…

5) Corporate Chic

Hopefully, you didn’t ditch all of your suits back in 2020 because they are back. Some updates we’re seeing on the runways are chic pinstripes, pleated pants, neckties, and briefcase bags. Matching suits, 3-piece suits, oversized suiting, and colorful suits are all in. Another piece of this trend is the oversized white button-down. Are you seeing the overall theme? Everything’s oversized!

Suits, in general, are pretty wearable, especially for the office. If you don’t want to wear a full suit, try just wearing a blazer with jeans and a tee. Or grab something in the pinstripe print like pants, a blazer, or a skirt. It’s so sophisticated and flattering!

6) Lux Tux

Speaking of suits…the tuxedo is also back! If you’re looking for an unexpected evening event outfit idea, a tuxedo suit can be super sexy, sharp, flattering, and powerful. And it doesn’t have to be a traditional menswear tuxedo, although that’s what we’re seeing on the runways. We also saw a tuxedo dress, oversized tuxedos, and slim-fit tuxedos. The most important details to look for if you want to try this trend are that special lapel and stripe down the leg.

To make this more wearable, I would wear either the tuxedo jacket or the tuxedo pants. You can definitely wear the full tuxedo look and own it for an event. But to dress it down a little, wearing either the jacket or the pants on their own can be really cool.

7) Meant To Move

Fringe and paillettes and feathers, oh my! This trend is all about anything that flutters, flows, and inspires you to move! Including long trains, tassels, and architectural shapes that look like they’re already in motion. This trend is very cool! But how is this wearable? You can try fringe on a jacket or bag, a paillette bag, or a small feather detail. For a special occasion, a long train would be beautiful too.

Be aware that sometimes when you add this sort of additional texture, it can add width to your frame and make you look larger than you are. That’s why I think an accessory is the best option for this trend!

8) Full Transparency

Everything’s sheer! This is another trend we’ve been talking about for a few years. I love this trend for women over 40! A sheer garment keeps you covered but is still super sexy and elegant. You get to show a little skin without showing everything. On the runways, we’re seeing the extreme sexiness of the sheer trend with peek-a-boo undergarments and fully sheer dresses. But to make it more wearable, you could try a sheer skirt with a slip underneath, a sheer top with a tank underneath, or a cool transparent dress over a pair of pants and a cami. It’s a really fun trend that’s the perfect combination of elegance and sexiness.

9) Color Trends – Molten Lava

Every season, there are new color trends. This doesn’t mean that other colors are “out”, it just means that these are the more prominent colors of the season. There are two main color trends this year. The first is molten lava, which is bold, bright red. This is a super wearable color and looks great on a lot of skin tones. You could wear a red jacket, top, shoes, bag, or even lipstick. If this color doesn’t work for you, don’t worry! There are SO many shades of red out there that will work well for your skin tone. Here’s how to find a red that works for you…hold the color up to your face and if it brightens up your face, that’s a great color for you!

10) Color Trends – Meadow Violet

The second trendy fall color is meadow violet, which is a really cool color for fall. This color will be trickier to find and wear. But you can keep it simple by trying a blouse or accessories. If that’s not your color, that’s okay! Try carrying a bag or wear a pair of shoes instead of actual clothing in the color.

One other color I wanted to mention is PINK! Valentino’s runway was a completely pink fashion show. Almost every look was head-to-toe pink and SO cool. You can watch the show here in case you’re interested.
