Today I am going to talk about a brand and a product which are not popular in the UK but are amazing. I am talking about Flor de Mayo Cleansing Balm with chamomile. It is very similar to one of my favourite cleansing balms, The Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Butter, which I already reviewed on this blog. Today I am going to review the Flor de Mayo cleanser.
About Flor de Mayo
Flor de Mayo is a Spanish cosmetics brand. As they say, it is a brand created for women by women and they make products using natural ingredients. They also try to reduce the environmental fingerprint by using sustainable packaging.
They are specialised mainly in skin care products, for the face as well as for the body, though they also have some nice perfumes.
In my opinion, the most iconic product they have is the one I am going to review today, the Camomile Cleansing Balm.
How and why did I get Flor de Mayo Cleansing Balm?
I have seen lots of Spanish Youtubers and bloggers using this product and all of them agree on how good it is. That made me want to try it, but I could not get it here in the UK.
I tried to buy it when I went to Spain but it was out of stock in all the stores I visited. After coming back to the UK, I contacted the brand Flor de Mayo to ask them if it was possible to get the product in the UK. They told me that Flor de Mayo products are normally available in TK Maxx stores. However, they offered to send me the product and I agreed.
I got a great surprise when I get the parcel they sent me. I found not one, but two cleansing balms and an unexpected body mist, which I will review in a separate post.

My thoughts about Flor de Mayo Cleansing Balm
Flor de Mayo Cleansing Bal Packaging
I love the packaging of this product. It comes in a metallic tin, which is, therefore, environmentally friendly. It has a metallic screw lid to close the product. This tin looks quite a vintage style. I love this tin because you have the possibility of re-using the tin to store something else after the product is finished.
The top of the lid shows a printout of a chamomile flower as decoration. It shows also the name of the brand and the product. The bottom side of the tin has a sticker with the ingredient list printed.
About the texture and smell
This product is white butter. It has a creamy texture which melts between your hands when you rub it before applying. It feels soft and buttery on your skin. I mentioned that the product is white. However, it becomes colourless after melting. The butter melts in a sort of oil when you rub it between your fingers.
It has a strong smell but I don´t dislike it. I don´t know how to describe this smell, I should say it is a vintage, elegant lady smell. Whatever the smell is, it brings me lots of memories. When I smell this product my childhood comes to my mind. I think when I was at my granny´s home playing with the few cosmetics she had.
The smell does not last long on the skin. However, you may not like this product if you are not a fan of strong scents.
How does Flor de Mayo Cleansing Balm perform?
I always do double cleansing and I have been using this product as the first step to eliminating my makeup. The product leaves my face clean and removes most of the makeup, including waterproof products like eyeliners and mascaras. It is easy to rinse off. The butter and oils contained in the formula easily emulsify with water making the rinsing process very easy and efficient, even when using cold water.
The product is very soft and gentle on the skin. My skin is dry and I need to be very careful not to use products that dry it more. However, this cleansing butter does not dry my skin at all. It does not hydrate it either, but I don’t feel my skin itchy or tight after using it as happens with other products.
It has a high amount of perfume and, therefore, irritates my eyes. My eyes sting a bit after using this cleansing butter and sometimes I get blurred vision. However, I can avoid this problem using an eye makeup remover or micellar water before applying the cleansing butter. While doing that, I remove beforehand most of my eye makeup and I only need to apply a small amount of cleansing butter to my eyes area.
About the ingredients
This product contains a good amount of beneficial oils and butter, such as Shea butter, sweet almond oil and olive oil as well as chamomile oil which has soothing properties. However, all these oils and butter are mixed with a base of glycerin and paraffin. I don’t say though that these ingredients are not good for the skin, different pharmaceutical preparations contain a paraffin and glycerin base.
Simply keep in mind that mentioning the good oils and butter and avoiding to mention glycerin and paraffin is something more marketing related. Glycerin is even known to be a very good moisturising agent though.
This product does not contain colourants, silicones or parabens, which are not harmful to the skin but are polemic ingredients and some people prefer to avoid them.
This cleansing butter contains, however, huge amounts of perfume which may cause irritation to people with sensitive skin.
Other considerations
I would like to comment on something about this product that does not make sense to me. The brand claims that this product strengthens the lashes and I cannot agree with that.
Why? First of all, it does not contain any ingredient with this property. Secondly, the way you use this product implies that the product does not stay on the skin long time. You apply the product, rub it on your skin for a couple of minutes and then you rinse it off. The ingredients are not in contact with the skin time enough to make this sort of effect. I don’t think any ingredient can strengthen the lashes in a couple of minutes. Think that normally you apply a water-based cleanser after this balm, so even you are washing off the rest of the cleansing butter.
It is true that this product is soft and gentle with the skin and that it does not break the lashes. But it does not strengthen them either I think that this is a marketing sentence rather than a real effect of the product.
I used this product x times before I finished it. I only need a small amount of butter to remove the makeup from my face.
Conclusion
In summary, I am very happy of having the opportunity to try this product and I would like to thank again Flor de Mayo for that. I like the product. It removes my makeup well without effort and without drying my skin. That is all that I want for a cleansing balm. If I want hydrated skin I will use a moisturiser after the cleanser.
The product is easy to use, rinse off easily, is gentle with my skin, lasts for a few months and it is not expensive. What else can we ask for?
Title for This Block

- Easy to rinse off
Cons
- Don’t mention the paraffin
- Claims that strengthens the lashes but I don’t think it does
- A strong smell not suitable for people with sensitive skin
- Produces blurred vision
- Not easily available in the UK
Do I recommend it?
I love this product and I will make sure that I always have a spare at home. If you can buy it, don’t doubt and do it. It is a very good product.
Finally, you may be asking if it is a dupe of The Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Butter. It is not a dupe. I also love The Body Shop butter but they are different, though the Flor de Mayo product is cheaper.
I cannot say which one is better as I love both. They are good alternatives to each other. They are simply different but both of them are amazing and I want both always on my stash.
