T
here’s no doubt the style fairy godmother recently graced the fashion scenes with her presence, sprinkling pixie dust on the ensembles of stylish Black stars across the globe. Last week, the 79th Venice International Film Festival kicked off and celebrities like Tessa Thompson and Jodie Smith owned the festival as they would their style playgrounds. Also, movie premieres like The Ring of Power presented celebrities with the opportunity to embody glamorous attires in anything but laissez faire fashion. Venice film festival fashion.
The looks
Trust Tessa Thompson to never play average. It’s either she shows up in goddess-level looks or nothing at all. Last week, Thompson was on an attire roulette at the Venice Film Festival. She arrived at the event in a see-through Victoria Beckham number paired with red Vivienne Westwood gloves, Lapima sunglasses, and Anny Nord shoes. The redhead was later spotted at the festival opening in a silver and black statement Giorgio Armani Privé 2009 spring/summer couture collection look, which featured a strapless structured bustier and shimmery black sheath skirt. To match the carpet, Thompson opted for an all-red affair in the form of a dramatic Elie Saab FW22 mini dress with an exaggerated hood and extra lengthy train, which seamlessly blended with the red box bag, tights, pumps, and of course, lipstick. Certainly, the star came REDy!
Another star who stole moments at this year’s Venice Film Festival was Jodie Turner-Smith, who serially graced the carpet with elaborately tailored numbers. From a heavily feathered Gucci dress to a structured Balmain denim dress, the star poised differently like a peacock in prime. Amid the perfect sartorial execution was an abstract crayon-printed georgette and twill Christopher John Rogers number which splashed its elegance on all beholding eyes. Smith finished the look with a statement Bulgari choker, matching earrings, and a Gucci clutch purse. Talk about a real-life goddess.
Elsewhere, South Africa’s Nomzamo Mbatha wore a custom Vanessa Gouden dress to the Empowering HER event organized by her foundation, Nomzamo Lighthouse. The strapless black and white piece featured lace detail at the upper bodice and an attached train flowing from the waistline. The minimal accessories and messy bun stepped back and allowed the frock its moment of fame.
