Scan Health Plan said it will begin selling Medicare Advantage plans in the state of Texas in 2023, expanding the senior insurer’s coverage to four states.

The nonprofit payer also plans to expand its existing footprint in Nevada by moving into Nye County, a region northwest of Las Vegas.  

“The expansions would bring Scan’s total reach to nearly seven million potential customers across 20 markets in four states,” SCAN said in a statement. Scan currently insures about 270,000 people across California, Nevada and Arizona.

Medicare Advantage enrollment has more than doubled over the last decade as the program grows in popularity.

In 2021, more than 26 million people opted for Medicare Advantage coverage, representing 42% of the total Medicare population, according the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The expansion is dependent on approval from federal health regulators, according to Scan. The push comes as Scan Group, which owns the health plan, works to diversify its portfolio beyond health plans for seniors.

Recently, Scan Group agreed to invest in SafeRide Health, a non-emergency medical transportation broker. The deal is aimed at reducing barriers that seniors face in getting to healthcare appointments.
