90s revival fan? Lover of short hairstyles? Stop scrolling. The Bixie haircut is here to get you excited about cropped ‘dos again and call back to your favourite decade at the same time, with all the grunge-girl aesthetic you’re picturing.
First worn by ‘90s It-girls like Winona Ryder and Cameron Diaz, the bixie was a controversial cut way back when, when *beautiful* and *feminine* were pretty strictly partnered with long, flowing locks. We’re looking to Baek, a member of the Rush Artistic Team, for his thoughts.
Ready to find a salon near you? Check out our list of Rush hairdressers across the UK and get booked in for a bixie! Our highly talented team will give you a full consultation and listen carefully to what you want, for a result you’re sure to love. We’ll also provide advice for styling and taking care of your ‘do on the daily.
What is a bixie haircut?
Recently we’ve seen texture and volume skyrocket in popularity, and the bixie is 2022’s short-hair solution for the craze. The word is a combination of ‘bob’ and ‘pixie’ and that’s exactly what the bixie is. Usually shorter than a bob and longer than a pixie, this style boasts daring, choppy layers but preserves some length (sometimes complete with bangs), to soften your features and provide a distinct, “I woke up like this” look. It’s less drastic than a pixie too if you’re suffering from scissor-fear and want something easy to maintain.
Look at trailblazing celebrities like Florence Pugh and Anne Hathaway for A-lister inspo.
Reality check: what is the bixie like to wear?
In an oh-so-2022 fashion, you can embrace the natural style of your tresses with a bixie; there’s no one way to wear it, whether curly, coily, wavy or straight. In fact, the less *done* it looks, the more on-brief you’ll be.
As with any layered cut, the bixie can lend volume to both finer and thicker hair, creating the illusion of width for the former and removing weight for the latter. Use a volumising, texturising spray like L’Oreal Pli and dry with your head upside down to enhance the untamed look, and finish by softly smoothing your lengths through to the ends.
What about when you’re off-duty? Depending on how long you choose to go, updos could still be an option, and this cut will look sweet pushed back with a headband for gym visits and duvet days. Between washes, dry shampoo will likely be a must to perk up your strands and revive texture.
And what is a mixie haircut?
Love the creative, retro edge to a bixie? Go one step further; combine a pixie cut and a mullet and you have the mixie! With longer lengths around the nape of the neck and shorter layers up in front, this is an artistic creation for those who aren’t afraid to go bold.
Whether the bixie or the mixie floats your boat, these on-trend cuts are a sure-fire way to satisfy that familiar urge to try a short, stylish new look. Mix (or bix!) it up!
